At Aviva, we believe that by acting responsibly for the long term in how we do business, we will help meet our ambition to provide peace of mind to our customers.
At Aviva, we plan, implement and monitor our Corporate Responsibility actions against many different aspects of our business. This includes how we conduct business with our customers, employees, brokers and other business partners. It also is reflected in our support of human rights, how we manage health and safety issues, our responsibility and actions in the community, as well as our commitment to the environment. Corporate Responsibility affects every aspect of our day-to-day business and involves every employee.
Aviva supports the United Way of Canada through corporate donations. In 2009, we contributed almost half a million dollars to the United Way.
At Aviva we also feel it’s important to support our employees in their own charitable activities. Aviva Canada employees can benefit from three programs designated to assist employees’ directed efforts:
Matching Dollars, a program that matches a portion of our employees’ personal giving.
Dollars for Doers, a program that makes donations to charities where employees volunteer at least 40 hours each year.
Volunteering on Company Time, a program that grants paid time off to employees for two full workdays of volunteering at a registered charity each year.
In 2006 Aviva plc announced its commitment to becoming the first carbon neutral insurance company. This is done by offsetting our remaining emissions through gaining carbon credits from projects in several countries around the world. In Canada, one of the many ways we are delivering on this commitment is through changing the way we do business, and moving towards using electronic copies of documents and eventually eliminating printing completely. Our goal is to eliminate the use of 16.5 million sheets of paper to print broker copies of policy documents, saving 82.5 tons or paper, or 1,395 trees!
For our customers we offer a Hybrid Vehicle Program, rewarding them by offering a discount on their auto insurance when they drive a hybrid vehicle. In less than two years, approximately 5,000 customers have participated in this program. Our Autograph program offers lower rates (average 20%) to more than 7,000 customers who drive less distance and at off-peak times.
The annual Aviva Community Fund competition encourages and supports positive community change from St. John’s, Newfoundland to Victoria, British Columbia. The competition provides all Canadians with a forum where they can leverage the power of their social networks to promote their ideas for change at either a local or national level. After several rounds of voting by the public, a panel of judges evaluates the most popular ideas. Upon culmination, funds are awarded to the winning ideas to help bring them to life. As with all of our campaigns, our employees are welcome and encouraged to play an active role.
In 2010, the Aviva will donate $1,000,000 worth of funding as part of the Aviva Community Fund. Will you donate an idea? Visit www.AvivaCommunityFund.org to learn more.
For every employee survey completed globally during the 2009 session, Aviva plc has donated ₤1 to Save the Children, the lead partner for ‘international / developing world’ causes.
